Multi Currency Cards (MCC) let you link several source accounts — each held in a different currency — to a single Aspire card. Instead of being tied to one account per card, you can spend in multiple currencies from the same card, on both virtual and physical cards.
Source account:
A debit account in a supported currency (for example, your HKD or GBP account).
Multi Currency Cards support debit accounts only; Advance (charge) accounts aren't supported.
Key highlights:
Link multiple source accounts to one virtual or physical card
The card automatically uses the matching currency account when available, helping you avoid unnecessary FX conversions
If no matching account exists, the card uses the account with the highest equivalent balance, processed as an FX transaction (an FX conversion fee applies)
Which currencies are supported for Multi Currency Cards?
You can link your Multi Currency Card to source accounts held in any of the following 13 currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, HKD, SGD, AUD, NZD, CAD, CHF, JPY, CNY, SEK, and NOK.
For details on how Aspire chooses a source account for each transaction, see "How does Aspire decide which source account is used?" below.
How do I create a Multi Currency Card on Aspire?
The flow is similar to creating a regular card, with a few extra steps:
Go to Cards and click "+ New Card".
Choose the recipient, card name, purpose, and card type (Virtual or Physical).
Select source accounts — All available debit accounts are selected by default. Edit this to include or exclude specific accounts.
Set the spend limit currency — Defaults to HKD. You can change it to any currency from your linked source accounts.
Add to a budget (optional) — Only budgets whose source accounts include all of your card's source accounts are eligible. Ineligible budgets appear greyed out.
Review and confirm.
Can I edit the source accounts linked to my Multi Currency Card?
Yes. Go to Card details → Edit to add or remove linked source accounts on your card.
Can I choose the currency for my card's spending limit?
Yes. During card creation or editing, select the spend limit currency from a dropdown.
Default: HKD
Available currencies: All currencies from your card's linked source accounts
Transactions made in other currencies are converted into your selected spend limit currency so your card limit can be tracked consistently
How does Aspire decide which source account is used for a transaction?
When you make a transaction, Aspire automatically picks the best source account based on the transaction currency and your available balances, in this order:
A matching currency account with enough balance (no FX)
Otherwise, the linked account with the highest equivalent balance, processed as an FX transaction (a conversion fee applies)
If no single account can cover the full amount, the transaction is declined
The scenarios below show how this plays out.
Scenario 1 — Transaction currency matches a linked source account
If the transaction currency matches one of your linked source accounts and that account has enough balance, Aspire debits it directly — no FX conversion applies.
Example: Your card is linked to HKD, USD, and EUR accounts. You make a USD 500 purchase on Google Ads, and your USD account has USD 2,000 → the USD account is debited USD 500, with no FX fees.
Scenario 2 — Currency matches but balance is insufficient
If the matching account exists but doesn't have enough balance, Aspire falls back to your linked account with the highest equivalent balance across all currencies. Because that account is in a different currency, this is processed as an FX transaction (a conversion fee applies).
Example: You make a USD 5,000 purchase, but your USD account only has USD 200. Your HKD account has HKD 50,000 (your highest equivalent balance) → Aspire debits the HKD account.
Scenario 3 — Transaction currency doesn't match any linked account
If the transaction currency doesn't match any of your linked source accounts, Aspire debits the account with the highest equivalent balance. Since there's no matching account, this is processed as an FX transaction (a conversion fee applies).
Example: Your card is linked to HKD and USD accounts. You make a GBP 300 purchase, but no GBP account is linked. Your HKD account has HKD 40,000 and your USD account has USD 3,000 → the HKD account has the higher equivalent balance, so Aspire debits it.
Scenario 4 — Insufficient balance across all linked accounts
If none of your linked accounts have enough balance to cover the full amount, the transaction is declined.
Example: You attempt a USD 10,000 purchase. Your HKD account has HKD 5,000 and your USD account has USD 200. Neither can cover the full amount → the transaction is declined.
Key rules to remember
No partial debits: Aspire never splits a single transaction across multiple source accounts — the full amount must be available in one account
Same-currency tiebreaker: When multiple accounts share the same currency, the one with the higher balance is used
Refunds and reversals: Always credited back to the exact account the original transaction was debited from, even if balances have changed since
How is the physical card fee charged for a Multi Currency Card?
The fee is charged in the business's local currency (e.g. HKD for HK businesses):
Sufficient local-currency balance → deducted from that account
Insufficient balance → deducted from your highest-balance linked account (FX transaction)
No account has enough balance → you can't proceed with the physical card order
A message during ordering shows which account will be charged.
